Product Description

A single drop-leaf table with one leg pivoting for support this is a rare opportunity to acquire a very good vernacular piece. Yew wood furniture is highly prized in England for its rarity and color.

This piece is particularly interesting as it is not veneered but solid in form, both the top and all the turned legs. Interestingly, at some stage one leg separated along a grain line (see image) and was repaired with pegs (screws?). A loss to a corner of the drop-leaf has been left unrepaired and no-one has tried to straighten the warps to the legs. One must consider this a completely honest piece of vernacular furniture.

As always, this sort of piece is notoriously difficult to date but the pad feet and general design do appear to be early. So I would conservatively place it around 1780.

A fabulous piece.

England, circa 1780
