Product Description

In superbly colored and patinated mahogany with a faux-fluted inlaid cornice and intricately inlaid and banded angles, with two short drawers above six long drawers on well shaped bracket feet. With fine original brass handles, cast back-plates and pierced escutcheons this piece is the finest quality chest on chest of its type that we have seen. The base is marked in chalk Major Pearson and a label to the reverse is inscribed Bartlett’s Depository / Haslemere / Date June 19 40 / Samuelson. Presumably this piece was placed in storage when Major Pearson joined his regiment during the momentous month following the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk on May 26th 1940  and the surrender of France to the German forces in late June.
