Each chair with foliate ribbon crest rail, …. Fret work splat, downswept channeled arms and scrolled handholds, the shaped balloon seat framed by an acanthus and shell carved seat rail, all supported on cabriole legs decorated with anthemion and terminating in scroll feet.

Instantly recognizable as Portuguese, these chairs were made during the reign of Dom Joao (King Joseph I, rule 1750-1777) of the finest solid padouk.

Typically, Portuguese furniture of the period exhibit strong French or English influences as do these chairs. However, the foreign influence is blurred with the addition of rocaille carving prominent in the Dom Jose period that give a particularly national character to the chairs.
