In Oak and of typical form, replicating the standard British mailbox of the late 19th century and a variation of the hexagonal Penfold box, this piece would have been positioned in the entrance hall of a rather grand house for the residents and their guests to leave mail for collection at least twice a day. A plaque inlaid to the front of the box advises the rates of posts beginning at one penny for one ounce of mail.
