A rare survival, this extremely rare armorial carved oak newel post or finial of a lion sejant-erect supporting a coat of arms is supported on the remains of a slightly domed base, and the fierce face is particularly appealing.
Although the arms have not been traced to a specific family the same arms do appear in a stained glass window in Edenhall, Cumbria on the borders of the Lake district in the very north of English and date to the same period.
English c.1610
