A particularly fine example of these striking tables from the Galle District of what is now Sri Lanka. The tilt top with a swirling design in multiple specimen woods above a twined baluster standard, raised on stepped and carved cabriole legs terminating in bird-head feet. The creatures here possibly derive from representations of jatayu, a demi-god in the form of a vulture who played a central role in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.
