DESCRIPTION

Of excellent quality timber, the column with finely defined cluster of columns bound by lobed collars and topped with a well carved Gothic crocket, the two revolving tiers reeded to the edges, the shaped & reeded tripod legs terminating in the original leather bound brass casters.

This superb Gothic piece was, by repute, part of a suite of furniture ordered in the early 1790's by William Jones for his folly Clytha Castle, Monmouthshire, Wales from the illustrious London cabinet-making firm of Mayhew & Ince. Clytha was begun by Jones in 1790 to commemorate the memory of his wife, the grand-daughter of the Duke of Devonshire who had tragically passed away in 1787.

William Jones recorded in great detail the costs associated with building and furnishing Clytha, considered one of the finest examples of the Gothic style developed by Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill. Jones' handwritten ledger survives today in the Great Archives, Ebbw Vale, Wales and records payments of £1,000 to Mayhew & Ince for furnishings between 1791-2.

This table is en-suite with a magnificent pair of card tables with cluster legs and inlaid crocket decoration sold by Sotheby's New York in 2013 and with Mallett's, London until 2016.
