DESCRIPTION

The six rectangular frames with boxwood line inlay, the canvas screens well painted to the fronts with Gothic imagery while the reverses remain plain.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) was one of the most influential designers and architects of the second quarter of the nineteenth century and his legacy survived his untimely death strongly influencing such giants of modern design as William Morris and later Frank Lloyd Wright. During his short life Pugin's output was prolific designing, building, and furnishing numerous domestic and religious structures culminating in what was his most famous commission, the interiors of the new Palace of Westminster. Pugin's range was all encompassing, designing furniture and woodwork, silver and metalwork pottery and textiles, wallpaper books and jewelry all of which are avidly collected by museums and private collectors.

The example presented here is a particularly fine example of the Pugin aesthetic.
