DESCRIPTIONA superb pair of carvings of a lion and a unicorn, both holding heraldic shield of a wheat sheaf which is the heraldic badge of the ancient Grosvenor family, now the Dukes of Westminster, reputedly the richest family in England who own much of Mayfair and Belgravia. Both carvings are highly realistic and wonderfully formed. And these pieces are thought to be some form of civic carving as the supporters of the Grosvenor arms are rampant dogs rather than the lion and unicorn which have royal connections. The color, patina, and detail of these carvings is unsurpassed. And the horn to the unicorn is original. A magnificent survival from the late seventeenth century.
English c.1680
