DESCRIPTIONA great table of substantial size and magnificent color that bears all the attributes and quality of the firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London. The single piece top of beautifully mellowed Fustic above a mahogany base of two drawers to each side, oak-lined, above a trestle support joined by a turned and carved cross-bar over four ribbed and hipped legs terminating in the original brass casters. What raises this excellent piece of furniture above the norm is the choice of timber. Fustic is an extremely rare South American tropical hardwood from the Amarillo group of the mulberry family, Chlorophora Tinctoria, that in 18th and early 19th century cabinetmaking was used most often in small quantities as an inlay or banding. It is exceptionally rare to find a large table topped with a solid piece of Fustic. This piece is of the highest quality.
