DESCRIPTION

As examples of early Windsor chairs, these stylish pieces are about as good  as they get.

Each with a triangular stick-back radiating from an exaggerated rear wedge to the elm deeply dished saddle-seat and held in place by a scroll-ended top stay-rail, the cabriole front legs terminating in pad feet and joined by an elliptical H-form stretcher.

The elements of the design can firmly be attributed to the Thames Galley region circa 1770 and Bernard Cotton illustrates a number of rare early examples bearing similar characteristics in The English Regional Chair, pages 43-48.

A magnificent and rare pair.

Provenance: Alastair Sampson Antiques, London, 1998

English c. 1770
