DESCRIPTIONIn solid mahogany and strongly constructed with three turned columns below a semi-circular arm rail with two solid shaped splats with the refined touch of paper scroll decoration to the sides and serpentine molding to the bases. The serpentine rails to the chair connect four elegant cabriole legs ...pad feet with the front leg having scallop shell and husk motifs coupled with c-scrollsthat add to the superb design of this chairs. Corner chairs were fashionable in England in the first half of the 18th century and their design derived from the Dutch East Indian Burgomasker style. This example is a particularly successful expression of the type. The chair retains a Norman Adams lable to the rail and is probably the chair illustrated in 18th Century English Furniture, The Norman Adams Collection, pages 34-35 where it is described as George I, walnut c. 1720. This chair is most certainly mahogany but is identical in every dimension to the illustrated chair and is almost certainly the same piece. English c. 1725-30 SOLD
