DESCRIPTION

A magnificent and very stylish chest of four long drawers with a brushing slide, the drawers and top veneered in pearwood, with the feet veneered in walnut. An extraordinarily rare piece, this chest was purchased by Malletts on behalf of the 17th Earl of Perth in November 1967 for his seat Strobhall, where he amassed a fine collection of Scottish furniture and works of art with a particular concentration of items with Jacobite connections. The veneers on this chest resemble laburnum (as it was described on the original Mallet invoice) but this is the first case piece we have seen where the principal show wood is pear. Provenance: Collection Miss Iris Micklem(?) sold Sotheby's London November 10th 1967 lot 480, to Malletts and invoiced to the Earl of Peth on November 13th 1967 at his London residence, 2 Hyde Park Gardens, W2. The top drawer also retains a label for Phillips of Hitchin Ltd., leading dealers of fine English furniture for much of the 20th century.
