This is probably the finest bachelors chest we have handled and is in superb un-restored condition with magnificent color and patination.

The top is veneered in four panels, the center two quartered with the outer two book-matched, feather inlaid and cross banded.

The top opens to a fully veneered surface in matched quarters, feather inlaid with wide cross banding.

The top opens to a single loper centered on the frieze of the chest necessitated by the inclusion of a small drawers to each side of the frieze one of which was previously fitted for ink wells and compartments.

Two short drawers to the front are over two long drawers indicating an entirely usable design.

The sides are veneered in walnut and are cross banded throughout. The chest stands on its original shaped bracket feet which retain their original veneers.

All the hardware, handles, engraved backplates and escutcheons are original as are the steel hinges to the top.

Provenance: Unknown prior to the 20th Century, this chest formed part of the original furnishings of the Otto Kahn mansion at 1 East 91st Street in Manhattan, completed in 1918 and remained with the house until the residence became the convent of the Sacred Heart School in 1934. Many of the furnishings were purchased by Stair & Company and this piece was retained by Stair and then reputedly gifted by David Murdock the then owner of Stair in the 1980’s to the person we acquired it from.
